ANTECH
Model 2203 - Very High Efficiency Neutron
Counter (VHEnC)
Benefits
Modular construction based on the well-
·
proven ANTECH 'decagon' design for the
neutron counting of 200 litre waste drums.
·
Multiple neutron measurement methods in-
clude: neutron totals counting mode for very
low level measurements, neutron coinci-
dence counting to reach lower level detec-
tion thresholds and neutron multiplicity
counting to perform matrix correction where
sufficient Pu mass is present in the chamber.
·
The system can also be operated as an abso-
lute neutron multiplicity system, independ-
ent of calibration for intermediate level
waste.
·
Removable internal cadmium filters allow
detection efficiency to be varied in accor-
dance with the measurement requirement.
·
Very high detection efficiency, typically
36% with Cd filters deployed and between
41% and 45% with the internal Cd liner re-
moved.
Semi-automatic drum loading and unload-
·
ing.
Features
Designed for the measurement of Plutonium bearing intermediate and low level waste
·
in 200 litre (55 gallon) drums
·
Decagon shaped measurement chamber approximates the cylindrical geometry of the
drum eliminating the need to rotate the drum during neutron counting
·
AMSR-150 data is analysed by an optimised version of the LANL INCC code based on
super-HENC technology for cosmic-ray reduction.
·
Can be operated in conventional coincidence mode to eliminate the (α,n) neutron signal
and in multiplicity mode, where larger quantities of plutonium are present, to achieve
matrix correction
·
160 He-3 tubes (25mm diameter x 1metre length, 6 atmospheres fill pressure) arranged
in two rows of 80 tubes close coupled to the waste drum.
·
Optional `Add-a-Source' Cf-252 available for matrix correction which complements the
matrix correction by neutron multiplicity counting
Lower Limit of Detection of between 1.3 15mg 240Pueffective in totals mode equivalent
·
to between ~20 and 250mg total Pu (military grade)
