ANTECH
Neutron Passive Crate Counter
nPCC - Series 5100
Benefits
Generic crate counter tailored for neutron
·
counting of a variety of waste boxes in-
cluding B25 and the Standard Waste Box
(SWB).
·
Crate counter can be placed in a building or
operated from a remote location within a
transportable ISO container.
·
Multiple neutron measurement methods in-
clude: neutron totals counting, neutron co-
incidence counting and neutron multiplicity
counting.
·
The system can also be operated as an ab-
solute neutron multiplicity system, inde-
pendent of calibration for TRU waste.
·
Removable internal cadmium filters allow
detection efficiency to be varied in accor-
dance with the measurement requirement.
·
Very high detection efficiency, typically
~30% with Cd filters deployed and ~40%
with the internal Cd liner removed.
·
Avoidance of high Z structural materials in
the construction of the counter to reduce
cosmic-ray background
Features
High neutron detection efficiency using 1 inch He-3 tubes arranged in two rows in a
·
4p geometry.
Coupled to the ANTECH/ORTEC Advanced Multiplicity Shift Register (AMSR-
·
150) for conventional shift register or frequency distribution data collection and
analysis. Alternatively, the ANTECH Time Correlation Analyser (TCA) may be
used.
AMSR-150 data is analysed by an optimised version of the LANL INCC code in-
·
volving both multiplicity distribution truncation and veto counting of adjacent detec-
tors to reduce the cosmic-ray generated coincidence background.
Can be operated in conventional coincidence mode to eliminate the (a,n) neutron sig-
·
nal and in multiplicity mode, where larger quantities of plutonium are present, to
achieve matrix correction.
Optional `Add-a-Source' Cf-252 available for matrix correction which complements
·
the matrix correction by neutron multiplicity counting.
Optional High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma ray spectrometry system may be
·
added for determining Pu isotopic ratios. The combined instrument reports total Pu
mass.
